Description

This extraordinary Satsuma box is signed on the underside by the artist Ryozan for the manufacturer Yasuda. Okamoto Ryozan is widely regarded as the finest and most famous Satsuma artist of the Japanese Golden Age. He worked for the Kyoto-based company Yasuda which manufactured very fine earthenware. It is also marked with the Shimazu family crest, or mon.

This trinket box showcases extraordinarily intricate details, featuring a lively town scene framed by tranquil cherry blossoms. While children play, women, adorned in vibrant dress, carry out their daily activities. The sides of the box are embellished with geometric patterns and gold gilding, and the lid presents additional finely detailed figures. Legends say that the very finest Satsuma painters would go blind from the intricate details involved in their work.

Satsuma ware, a testament to the artistic brilliance from Japan's Meiji period, has captivated collectors worldwide for over 150 years. Renowned for its distinctive style, marked by intricate overglaze enamel and delicate gilding, Satsuma ware exquisitely showcases nature through its detailed depictions of flowers and animals. Originating near Kagoshima Prefecture on Kyushu Island, this esteemed ceramic tradition was initially crafted by skilled Korean artisans for local elites. Its international acclaim surged following the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Today, Satsuma ware remains a revered art form, treasured in major Japanese cities and highly sought after by collectors globally.
